On a weirdly warm New Year's Day, there's a stillness over the garden. No loud colors, no scent, just simple shapes, the slanting light, and lots of tan and green.</div>

I hadn't noticed how much saxifrage 'Whitehill' had filled in the gap between two pieces of tufa this year. It's always done so well for us that I kind of take it for granted.</div>

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Lemon Twist' is getting kind of big to remain in the trough after 6+ years, a common problem with even slow-growing dwarf selections. I love it this time of year for the light it brings so it will stay another year, at least.</div>

It's been a crazy month....houseguests...heavy snow...Thanksgiving. One day I was raking leaves and riding my bike, the next I was shoveling snow and aiding stranded neighbors. Just looking at the photos on my phone I can hardly believe this all happened within the last month. Above is one of the sarracenia troughs. The fall color was delightful on November 2nd.</div>

No inner core, I just keep the hypertufa mix dry enough to not slump. I have a belt clamp around the tube because I'd already cut it vertically with a jigsaw to guarantee that I'd wouldn't have to destroy the mold to release the planter.</div>

The last four days of our Iceland trip were centered around the northern part of the island, using Akureyri as our base. Above is Godafoss, another of Iceland's incredible waterfalls. Not a tree to be seen, just thunderous water pouring over bare rock. Icelandic history says that it was here in the year 1000 that the lawspeaker of the parliament threw the old wooden Norse gods into the water, representing a decisive break with the pagan gods and a turn towards Christianity.</div>

Nearby we stopped at the geothermal area of Hverir. It was only a few minutes from the above photos, but felt like another world. Fumaroles, bubbling mud pools, steam vents, the overwhelming smell of sulphur... I was so glad that the younger kids decided to stay in the car as it's a of dangerous area for the inattentive. The whole ridge was steaming, as you can see in the background.</div>

We took advantage of this phenomenon and soaked in the blue-gray geothermal heated mineral waters in the nearby Myvatn Nature Baths. Warm and thick, (smelly, too) the water felt great, on my sore body, especially with a beer in hand. Iceland is quite civilized that way.</div>

We spent a good part of one day of our Iceland trip driving around the Snaefellsnes Peninsula northwest of Reykjavik. It's an area of incredibly diverse terrain, with waterfalls, grassland, clear streams, rocky seaside cliffs, black beaches, and mountains topped with a glacier. Above is the famous church at Budir.</div>

We returned late this past week from 12 days in Iceland. It was our first trip there despite it being on our short list of vacation destinations for decades. We were lucky to travel with a close Icelandic friend and her family who live in NJ. She had a very ambitious itinerary for us, and we kept moving in order to pack as much as possible in the time that we had. </div>

I know I'm late to the pitcher plant craze, but I've been infatuated with this container of bog plants this spring. It's the first thing that I look at when I get home from work. The planter is a two-walled plastic one I picked up on sale last summer. The plants are almost all from last August's trip to the incredible <a href="http://www.rarefindnursery.com/">Rare Find Nursery</a>. There are five different sarracenias, plus bog asphodel, a small spiranthes orchid, a cardinal flower, and a dwarf cranberry. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For drainage, we drilled a hole into the inside wall of the planter a couple inches from the bottom. Since the planter has no drainage hole in the bottom, this allows the bottom couple inches of planting medium to stay moist. We used a mix of peat moss, decomposed pine needles, and granite chips, with a little sand if I remember correctly, to ensure that the plants were growing in the low fertility medium they need. We top-dressed the planter with a couple inches of pine needles for the winter, and buried it in the garden up to the rim to help keep the temperature more stable.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
It's 90 degrees today but I'm still finding it hard to believe that it's Memorial Day weekend. Spring has been so late and compressed and busy that I still have a list of gardening chores that I wanted to get done before it got too hot. Before today, I guess. </div>

Yes, it's a gorgeous time of the year in trough land. Each day when I get home from work I first rush to the driveway to see what's blooming, then later on I (reluctantly, sometimes) go in to see the family.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My new crush is this<i> </i>haberlia<i> </i>sp. Case (possibly <i>haberlia ferninandi-cobourgi </i>according to the Wrightman website, which I believe is synonymous with <i>haberlia rhodopensis</i>). I bought it four years ago from Wrightman Alpines Nursery at the annual plant sale at Stonecrop Gardens in Cold Spring, NY. I had never seen it for sale before and was excited to try it, as I told Harvey Wrightman as he rang me up that day. He assured me that it was easy, as long as it was north-facing, planted vertically, and free draining, but he warned me that it was slow to come to blooming size. Haberlias are gesneriads like African violets, but hardy, and evergreen, here in zone 6B. They originally hail from limestone cliffs in Greece and Bulgaria.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I planted it between two larger-sized rocks, north-facing, in a trough...and waited until this year for it to bloom. It's a gorgeous thing in bloom, and totally worth the wait. Harvey passed away in 2016, but I still think about him, and his patience and generosity with a total stranger that day, every time I enjoy this haberlia. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Thankfully his daughter Esther is still running the nursery, and coming to the Stonecrop sale every April.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I was hoping to get out into the garden this weekend and do a big spring cut-down and clean up, but nor'easter #2 had other ideas. We got 8+ inches of heavy snow on Wednesday, cracking trees (damn Callery pears) and bringing down many branches. We counted ourselves lucky not to lose power this time, uunlike nor'easter #1 ten days ago. It was sobering to be out shoveling at the tail end of the storm and to hear the trees breaking around us in the neighborhood. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1u7md8VffQqat7fBwpklyACgBG_yshAvs7hLj1IidWwp8wo4gpM5hQ8BtOdNRU0IdOk5eMtGC-gkQXZumSaJ8GM6UpxNOGyedh8gZDe5wv4JOc5MGpoEI3VYJd7kuwyQlpGWLRXQNcEA/s1600/snowy+tommy+crocuses.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1u7md8VffQqat7fBwpklyACgBG_yshAvs7hLj1IidWwp8wo4gpM5hQ8BtOdNRU0IdOk5eMtGC-gkQXZumSaJ8GM6UpxNOGyedh8gZDe5wv4JOc5MGpoEI3VYJd7kuwyQlpGWLRXQNcEA/s400/snowy+tommy+crocuses.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've been stuck inside doing garden pavilion drawings, reading about plants, and making notes about gardening. The Tommy crocuses didn't seem to mind the snow as much as I did, blooming their heads off both before and after.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Nor'easter #3 is scheduled for tomorrow, with more snow predicted.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We got about 6" of wet snow last night. It was already melting by dawn. It was quite pretty, but quite heavy.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It's exactly for wet snows like this that I do the turkey truss on some of the soft evergreens, otherwise the snow breaks them and leaves them misshapen. I can live with the evergreen hostage look if the trees can survive the winter unscathed.</div>

It wasn't exactly life giving me lemons, but when someone asked us to throw out a piece of 48 x 60" plexi at work, I threw it in my car instead. It took me a few months, but in December I picked up some pre-treated lumber, hinges and adhesive and made a cold frame. I installed it under the stairs to the deck, on the concrete slab, where it gets good southern light midday.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After the brutal deep freeze around New Years, I was finally able to work outside again last week. Neighbor Ray and I added a layer of 1/4" hardware cloth to the bottom to keep out varmints, lined the bottom and part of the sides with landscape fabric and poured in a couple hundred pounds of sand. The sand should provide some thermal stability and insulation for the pots, while also acting as a moisture reservoir. Any roots that escape their pots can run freely in the sand.</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I cut two 2x4s to hold the lid open while we worked in it. Into the cold frame went a couple rooted cuttings of my favorite lavender, a pot of <i>cotoneaster franchetii </i>cuttings, and some dormant first year <i>vernonia noveboracensis. </i>Also into the mix went a few pots of seed like <i>eryngium yuccifolium</i> that need to be stratified. I'm hoping that we can use the cold frame as a little nursery for germinating seed and growing on precious seedlings. With the lid closed the small pots will be safe from the never-ending squirrel inspections.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The cold frame should also function like an alpine house, keeping cold hardy but moisture averse plants like this delosperma happy throughout our wet winters. </div>

I was squishing through the yard yesterday on my way to the compost pile and was struck by the vibrant green of the <i>arum italicum </i>subsp. <i>italicum </i>under the Judd viburnum<i>. </i>It's a pass-along plant from my friend's yard so I've never known for sure if it's 'Marmoratum', though I suspect it is.</div>
